Clay. Paper. Ink.

A series exploring repair, continuation and the stories objects carry.

All that is broken is not lost. A porcelain plate has a life. It is sculpted, moulded, fired and decorated. Each one a minor work of art. They are used continuously to feed, hold and be treasured. And when they break, they are discarded.

But what if the story on the plate continues. Vic takes traditional patterned plates adorned with stories, such as the famous Willow pattern plate and once broken, reimagines the story. Continuing the plates illustration into something new, imagined and gives it life.

“ We get to a point in life and think maybe that’s it. We give up, feel disposable. But breaking something can produce a whole new story. I broke my life when I was 42. I walked away from a mundane job and failing relationship. I started drawing like I did as a child. It was my escape then and became my escape as an adult and crazily, began my career as an artist. This was in 2008.

In modern life we dispose of broken things without thinking. What if the once beautiful plate that lived a life continued. What if, like us, it became something madly different or even more beautiful. When I broke my life, I had no idea the adventures that lay ahead.

This collection looks at traditional blue ware, delft and Wedgewood, and turns it on its head but still retaining that initial visual beauty. A reimagination of something already beautifully created by artisans and those skilled in traditional methods.”
